Journey to Chinon

Struck camp and got on the road early.

First stop was Angles-sur-l’Anglin, on the borders of Berry and Touraine ; it gets its name from the Angles, the Saxon tribe that invaded England in the 5C, and from the river that separates the upper part of the village from the lower one. The village is famous for its 15000 year old Magdalenian sculptures of the "Witches’ Rock"...

Roc-aux-Sorciers is an Upper Paleolithic rock shelter site dating to the mid-Magdalenian cultural stage, ca 1200Bc made famous by its relief wall carvings. The site is in the French commune of Angles-sur-l'Anglin, in Vienne. The name 'Sorcerers' Rock', with its suggestions of pagan rendez-vous, was applied to the site long before the wall-carvings were discovered. We didn't have time to see these today ...maybe next visit.

We walked through the town which is full of old, winding, pretty streets.

It is the most beautiful French village, so photogenic. It is dominated by the ruins of a large castle on the top of the hill.

Origins: The town's name is from a Germanic people who came from Schleswig, now the German state of North plain: the Angles, whose descendants would have settled near the Anglin in the 7th century. This refers to the same Angles that settled the country to be known as England.

The castle Was built in the 12 th century with modifications up to the 15 th.

Preyilly-sur-Claise was our next stop off point. Mike and Dott had camped here many times over the past decades.

While they had coffee we explored up the top end of town and found the remains of the city wall and old castle.

Then the highlight of the day- lunch at Jacky Dallais La Promenade. Mike and Dott come here every year and highly recommended this Michelin star restaurant. It was quite expensive and we had been a bit apprehensive but we have to admit it was a superb culinary experience.

We rolled out to the car and carried on our journey to Chinon. The camping ground is directly opposite the castle over the river.

  1. Food looks great! The village looks more like those around Albi where we visited. Old and pretty.

Hope you're still having fun and not worn out yet!
