After breakfast we went for a walk in the village. We had already been in there once to get our shopping earlier in the day. The layout of the houses at Beaumes de Venise give the impression that it is built into a hill. The village nestles at the foot of the famous Dentelles de Montmirail, offering it a natural rampart against the Mistral wind I remember learning about in French at School.
After strolling through a few pretty, flower-lined streets and alleyways, we climbed up a short stairway and saw some fine old houses with some beautifully restored doors. We then explored several paths trying to get up to the ruins of the 12th century feudal chateau at the highest point in the village. We saw all the bits of it but didn't realise until later that you can't actually get into it.
There are many of the prehistoric caves dotted around the cliffs.
By midday it had got even hotter so we came back to the campsite and chilled out in the shade for a while.
In the afternoon after our siesta we walked back into town again in search of Notre Dame an old church. We had a map from the Tourist Information and walked miles without finding it.
Then we decided we would go for a swim in the local pool but it was shut so we sat int he shade and guzzled a bottle of sparkling water.
Eventually we wandered back to camp
